The Complete Social Butterflies Makeup Kit
While as a community, Social Butterflies support all gender presentations, for those seeking help in appearing more femme through makeup, this is for you. Our best makeup minds have put together the following shopping list to get you a complete setup.
For this look we are going to replicate Plastique’s “That Girl” makeup tutorial. To make things easier, we have linked a series of items we believe offer the best bang-for-buck. A complete makeup collection sadly is not cheap, however in completing this, you will have a great set of makeup that will last a long time with fantastic results.
Moisturiser or Primer
Always start with skincare! A good moisturiser or primer is the foundation of any look. There are many skin types, so make sure you find something that works best for you. With moisturisers, seek out something that does not leave you so oily that makeup slips or result in patchy skin.
If you intend to go out during the day, choose a moisturising sun screen intended for faces. These will be less oily and of course the number one daytime skincare tip is SPF always.
For a primer that is best for going out at night, we recommend an illuminating primer.
Colour Corrector
A peach or orange colour corrector is best for when you have beard and moustache shadow to cover. The blue/gray undertone of this shadow is best neutralised with a tone sitting on the other side of the colour wheel. For a more intense shadow, choose orange. This applies before your base foundation to neutralise discolouration.
Full Coverage Foundation
The baseline tone of your skin is set by your foundation. A good foundation will leave your skin looking smooth, matte and pore-less.
Make sure to choose a shade that matches your chest and neck, otherwise you will need to apply there as well to ensure a consistent look.
Bright Concealer and Cream Contour
You can subtly change the shape of your face at this step by strategically applying brighter and darker shades. Where to apply will depend on your face shape. See the tutorial to the left for more help.
Get a concealer which is 1 to 2 tones brighter than your foundation and a darker cream contour.
The combined effect will both lift and lower areas in your face to give the most femme shape.
Loose Setting Powder
A light dusting of a setting powder will set in your creams and eliminate any excessive shine, giving a matte look.
Powder Blush
The foundation will remove the rosier tones from your face. Return them in a way that lifts your face using powder blush.
This means applying it high on your cheekbones and blending into your contour zone.
Powder Bronzer
Much like how contour and blush was used to lift your cheeks, apply bronzer like in the video to the left to elevate your look.
Highlighter
A significant way to make your face radiate is with highlighter. Apply lightly to the areas you want to draw as much attention to. They will truly shine in the light.
Eyeliner Pencil
For this look we want to lay down a very thin line of brown eyeliner on top and a thin black on the waterline of the lower eyelid.
Eyeshadow Palette
It is worth investing in a good Eyeshadow Palette as this will be one of the most accessible ways to get creative and shake up your look.
By blending a range of shades from a well matched palette, you can achieve the perfect look. While pricey, we recommend a palette from either Natasha Dedona or Huda Beauty. These will become staples of your makeup set.
Eyelash Curler and Mascara
Finishing up your eyes, add some extra curl to your lashes with a curler and a quality mascara.
If you do not have long enough lashes, apply false lashes.
Lip Liner and Lipstick/Lip Gloss
For your lips make sure to clean off any loose skin with a paper towel, then apply lip liner and either a lipstick or gloss to fill in with colour.
For this look, choose something close to natural for a nude look.
Setting Spray
Great work we are almost done! Now let’s lock in your look to make sure that rain or shine, your makeup holds.
Just lightly mist your face or, as this tutorial will show you, achieve a more consistent look by spraying a powder puff and pressing it into your skin.
